Behind The Scenes On Kidney Raffle: A Resource For Online Change-makers

Heather, Christina and I all have more than a few years of experience working in the online world. We’re always looking to learn and understand new ways for leveraging online technologies to create what we love in the world, or to help others to create what they love. We’ve learned lots from other successful online creators and change-makers, but along the way, we’ve also come across (and been disappointed with) many folks in the online world who talk big and create hype about the amazing-ness of the internet and how easy it is to get things done or make money in your sleep when you use the internet and social media. We’ve come to be quite selective about who we learn from – a lot of people are telling stories about big money they’re making, so they can sell their online marketing course to you. Meanwhile they’re hardly making any money.

We’ve been through our own hard journeys and ups and downs of learning how much work goes into creating a successful online venture and we’ve watched many of our friends become disappointed and disheartened by their slow progress, and begin to question their competence of purpose because the “gurus” told them they’d be successful in just a few weeks or months.

There is some truth in the “power of the internet” claims. Online technologies have given us a lot more options for creating something out of nothing and for connecting people all over the world around an idea. But it also takes a lot of hard work and care to create a successful online venture. And you still have to do all of the usually things that need to happen when you’re launching a new venture: visioning and strategizing, finding partners to work with and developing those working agreements and working relationships, leading through clear and consistent messaging that’s customized for your various partners and audiences, setting up and maintaining technology systems and processes, watching the responses you get and continuously adapting, managing fear and self-doubt… and much, much more.

We learned so much while planning and running Kidney Raffle. We want to encourage and inspire you by being fully transparent and sharing the details of what we did, what results we got and what we learned from it all. We want to see the “power of the internet” used for good in the world. We’re sharing what we learned, along with “teachable moments” selected by Desiree Adaway, Jen Louden, Tayler Conroy and professional fundraiser, Paul McIntyre Royston, in the hope that it’ll help and encourage others who are also wanting to leverage the internet to create what they love and do good in the world.

Big thanks again…

So many people helped to make Kidney Raffle happen. We’re so grateful for their love, support, energy, attention and amazing skills. Their names are listed in the report so you know where to go if you’re looking for big-hearted, smart and skilled people to help you with your venture.

We also want to single out 3 people in particular who’s leadership and support we’re so grateful for. Danielle LaPorte from www.whitehottruth.com and Adam Baker and Karol Gajda from www.only72.com stepped up and took the Kidney raffle cause to their respective communities. They raised an additional total of $6720 for us through their communities. If you were a part of that, thank you so much! And if you’re not a part of these communities yet, go remedy that right now – these 3 people all share great resources, inspiration and lessons for leading and improving the quality of both your life and the lives of those around you. You can find them here:

Please share this report widely and let’s all learn together!

After reading it, we hope you’ll pop back here and let us know what you learned from reading this report, and what you’ll be applying. And of course we’d love you to also share about the online ventures and projects for social good that you’ve created and lead, and what you’ve learned in the process.

We’re still accepting donations until mid-Sept

If you’ve been wanting to donate, or if you’re inspired to join us after reading this report, we’d love that! You can use the button below or any other “donate” button on this site to add your donation. We’ll continue to add donors to our celebration road. Thanks so much!

The 100km Kidney March is coming up!

The 100km Kidney March that we committed to walking is coming up quickly – we’ll walk from 9 till 11 September. We’re sure it’s going to be an amazing experience where we’ll learn even more and get even more inspired. Thank you for being a part of that, and for all of your support. We’ll be thinking of you all as we walk and, in many ways, it really does feel like you’re walking with us. We’ll be posting about the walk – probably mostly on Facebook, so look out for that if you’d like to follow along and support us.
